Adrienne's Story and why Cancer Support Community is so Special!

Thank you for joining us to celebrate the 15th annual ADRIENNE’S SEARCH FOR CHILDREN’S CANCER CURE organized by the Woman's Club of Hermosa Beach. This year’s event will benefit the Kids Community and Teens Connect Support and Bereavement programs offered by Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach completely free of charge.

Adrienne Slaughter, the founder of the event knows firsthand the devastating effects of cancer and the impact it has on a child or teen. At just fourteen years old, she was a ranked tennis player in the state of Georgia when she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer common in children and teens and given just a 1% chance of survival. She underwent surgery that resulted in the necessary amputation of her right leg above the knee.

With the support of family, friends and her faith, she not only went on to play tennis again, but has become a known and respected keynote motivational speaker at events throughout the United States. Adrienne is now celebrating 40 years of being bone cancer free in April of 2021!

“Today, I feel it’s my calling to speak, motivate and inspire you, others, and anyone who may benefit. I’ve been so fortunate and want to give back. We have one life and must enjoy it each day, be prosperous, exceed expectations and overcome obstacles, no matter how hard they may be.”

With the tireless help, energies and time of the Women’s Club of Hermosa Beach, Adrienne founded Adrienne’s Search For Children’s Cancer Cure Event in 2006. This year’s beneficiary—Cancer Support Community South Bay’s Kids Community and Teens Connect programs provide much needed support for children and teens who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis in the family.

Cancer Support Community South Bay’s Kids Community programs are for children 5-12 years-old and teens ages 13 -17 who have been affected by cancer, have a family member battling cancer, or have lost a parent, grandparent, sibling or any other family member to cancer. The programs are designed to help them process their feelings in supportive and creative ways most beneficial to their age group. With the Covid-19 pandemic, all of Cancer Support Community’s free programs are now being offered on a virtual platform.

As a result of the pandemic, so many nonprofits offering programs for kids like Cancer Support Community have been unable  to host live fundraising events and really need your help. Adrienne and the Woman's Club of Hermosa Beach ask you to join us in donating, so that Cancer Support Community can continue to offer these vital programs for children and teens who, like Adrienne have been impacted by this terrible disease.
